Wellness
Preventative medicine is the best way to keep your pet healthy! Our team can help discuss the best way to prevent disease and illness by a combination of the annual physical exam, appropriate vaccination schedule, and other preventative treatments like deworming and tick medication. When you bring your pet in for their annual visit, a comprehensive physical exam is always performed, this can aid our veterinarians in diagnosing conditions early, when they are easiest to treat and manage. We recommend that healthy adult dogs and cats visit the clinic once per year. Puppies, kittens, senior pets, or pets with health issues will need more frequent checkups depending on their condition. It is also important to consider annual wellness blood work when our pets begin aging, as this can take a look on the inside for the best early detection of illness.
Our team will work directly with you to create a plan that works for you, that is specific to your pet - no two pets are the same! Our veterinarian's will recommend the best preventative care for your pet, based on your lifestyle and their risk factors.

Microchipping
Microchips are a safe and permanent way to identify your pet if they become lost. They are small scannable devices, about the size of a grain of rice. The microchip is placed just under the skin in-between their shoulder blades. When a lost pet is found, either a veterinary clinic, or animal shelter will use a handheld microchip scanner to check for a chip. If the pet has one, it will identify an ID number unique to your pet. Through a microchip database your pets information can be accessed and your pet can easily be returned to you! We highly recommend microchipping your pets when they are young, it can be done any time, and doing it at the time of spay or neuter is a great choice!

Ultrasound
Our ultrasound system is commonly used for obtaining sterile urine samples to help diagnose your pet with any potential urinary system condition that may be affecting them, such as infection, crystals, masses, etc. It can also be used to perform emergency tests known as an AFAST and TFAST to determine if there is any fluid located in the abdomen or chest, which can be essential to getting your pet the immediate care that they need. Detailed small animal abdominal and cardiac ultrasounds are referred out to specialists.

Surgery and Anesthesia
We perform a variety of both elective and non-elective surgeries. Elective surgeries such as spaying and neutering are important for the overall health of your pet, reducing the risk for different reproductive cancers, mammary cancer, and eliminating the risk for uterine infections, and accidental litters. Deciding when the best time is for you and your pet will depend on many different factors including your animals breed, history, behaviour, and lifestyle. Feel free to discuss any questions or concerns, and come up with the best protocol with your veterinarian! Other surgeries can include lump removals, rear dewclaw removals, entropion repair, aural hematoma's, lacerations, and wound management. Cosmetic procedures such as ear cropping dogs, and declawing cats is illegal to perform in Saskatchewan. Other cosmetic procedures such as tail docking and devocalization are not performed at EGVS. Our team is happy to discuss alternative options for your pet with you.
All surgeries are done under sterile conditions in our surgery suite. Depending on the procedure, it may be done under sedation or with Isofluorane gas (general anesthesia). After a thorough exam is performed, medications are tailored specifically to your pet and procedure. We make sure that pain is addressed before, during, and after each procedure.
While it is true that there is an inherent risk with any anesthesia or surgery, here at the clinic we take special care to minimize these risks. We make sure to thoroughly evaluate each patient, tailor an appropriate drug protocol, and offer pre-anesthetic blood work to detect any underlying problems that are not detectable with a physical exam. A Registered Veterinary Technician is assigned to each patient upon arrival at the clinic, they make sure your pet is taken care of from check-in to the time you take them home! They are responsible for monitoring your pets vital signs carefully throughout the surgery, this includes respiration rate, heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, ECG, and tissue oxygenation levels. We recommend intravenous fluid therapy for longer or invasive procedures, and often require it for older patients, or patients at-risk. Fluid therapy helps to stabilize blood pressure, hydrate the patient, and gives us venous access at a moment's notice, which all combine to give your pet a smoother recovery after their surgical procedure.
We always want to ensure that our patients receive the best possible care, for this reason certain procedures are referred out to board-certified veterinary surgeons who are able to perform complex procedures or have access to advanced equipment, board-certified anesthesiologists, and/or ICU monitoring and recovery.

Dentistry
We are happy to now offer dentistry services at Earl Grey Vet Services. We pride ourselves on performing top quality dental care. All COHAT's (Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment) are performed under general anesthesia to ensure quality care. All patient's receive IV fluids throughout their procedure, while an RVT monitors their vital signs throughout. Our trusted RVT's then perform full dental xrays for the doctor to review, a full mouth assessment is performed including probing each individual tooth. A treatment plan is then decided based on the xrays and the exam together. A full scaling and polishing of the teeth is completed by our RVT's for all patients. If any extractions need to be performed, we use local anesthetic blocks for additional patient comfort. All patient's spend the afternoon recovering at the clinic and are discharged at the end of the day with appropriate pain management! We are sure to go over any concerns from the xrays or exam, and provide a detailed home care sheet for each individual patient.

In-house Laboratory
Some conditions and emergencies require immediate answers. We have a variety of sophisticated laboratory machines that we can use to help us better understand what is going on with your pet. At EGVS we are able to perform a CBC (Complete Blood Cell Count) to evaluate red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. As well as a number of Chemistry panels and SNAP tests. These tests help our veterinarians to evaluate some of the major organs in the body that contribute to your pets overall health, including the liver, kidneys, pancreas, thyroid, etc.
Our Urinalysis machine can help to detect any abnormalities with your pets urinary system including urinary tract infections, kidney disease, crystals, etc.
Our microscope allows our RVT's and Doctor's to evaluate blood smears, ear swabs, urine samples, semen tests, and FNA's (fine needle aspirates) from lumps/masses.
Our RVT's are also trained to do in house fecal parasite testing for both large and small animals. This allows us to tailor an appropriate parasite management protocol for your pet!
Please contact the clinic if you have any specific questions in regards to the diagnostics we offer.

Hospitalization
It is never fun to be in the hospital! We only hospitalize pets when absolutely necessary to receive treatments that cannot be given at home. Usually hospitalized pets are on intravenous fluids and are receiving numerous medications at frequent intervals. We strive to make our hospitalized patients feel comfortable, and cared for. Patients requiring intensive care or monitoring, are often transferred to a 24HR hospital where they can receive around-the-clock care.
